Goal Setting & Time Management Exercise

Fill in the blanks.

1. List your long-term goals. What would you like to accomplish in the next seven to ten years? (Example: Buying a house, getting a M.S or Ph.D., getting married, having a family, moving into management)

2. List your short-term goals. What would you like to accomplish in the next three to five years? (Example: getting a job, starting a career, getting a car that runs)

3. From the lists above, set your priorities across all of your goals, listing first those, which are most important.

4. Now, turn the Medium Priority goals into either High Priority or Low Priority goals and then eliminate Low Priority goals. Now you have only High Priority goals to work on.

5. Now, list the tasks and activities you have to do to make your High Priority goals happen:
Goals don't just happen unless you break them into manageable tasks and activities. Select your #1 High Priority goal and identify and list the tasks and activities you have to do to make your #1 High Priority goal happen. Continue the process with your #1, #2, and #3 Priority goals on the next page.

6. Now pull out your calendar and schedule the items on your to do list, with your estimate of the length of time required for each task. Nothing gets done unless you gain control of your time and schedule the things you really want to accomplish.
